SLM Corporation appoints J. Terry Strange to board of directors

RESTON, Va., Aug. 6, 2008—The Board of Directors of SLM Corporation (NYSE: SLM), commonly known as Sallie Mae, announced today that it has appointed J. Terry Strange to the Board.

Mr. Strange is retired from KPMG LLP, where he served as vice chair and managing partner of the U.S. audit practice. He also served as the global managing partner of the audit practice of KPMG International and was a member of its international executive committee. Most recently, he served as lead architect of the redesign of the KPMG audit methodology and led development of the global strategy for the worldwide audit business. Mr. Strange currently serves on the Board of Directors of BearingPoint, Inc., Group1 Automotive, Inc., New Jersey Resources Corporation and Newfield Exploration Company.
