• The percentage of college and university presidents who were women grew from 10% in 1986 to 23% of the total in 2006.

• Women are most likely to head two-year colleges, where 29% of presidents were women in 2006 compared with 8% in 1986.

• In 2006, 6% of all college presidents were African American, 5% were Hispanic, 1% were Asian American, 1% were American Indian, and 2% were identified as “other.”

• The average age of college presidents has increased from 52 years in 1986 to 60 years in 2006.
