Ardavia, New Castle, DE
Ardavia’s mom, a Delaware firefighter, was her best friend and rock. When she passed away after battling a house fire, Ardavia’s world was forever changed. A resilient young woman, Ardavia stays focused on extracurriculars and academics—completing challenging courses and earning a 3.94 GPA.
Just as her mother was dedicated to serving their community, so is Ardavia. She’s completed over 100 hours of community service in the last three years and become an example of leadership and kindness. Her talents extend to the court too, where she thrives in volleyball and basketball, and loves motivating her teammates. Her goal is to continue to help people as she follows her dream of going to law school.
Simone, Elizabeth, PA
Home hasn’t been a safe space for Simone. She and her sister made the courageous decision to take control and try to find a safer environment. Despite not having someone outside of school to help guide her on the journey to college, she’s determined to make it happen.
A talented painter with a creative mind, Simone turns to art as an escape and source of hope through her most difficult times. She shares her artistic talents with her community—finding success with almost any medium she chooses. She’s brought to life murals within the walls of her school district and has volunteered to help landscape her community. Aside from art, Simone finds joy volunteering at her church, helping cook and serve meals for families in need.
Nothing will stand in Simone’s way of becoming a social worker to help kids who face similar situations as she has.
Jenna, Hammond, IN
At a young age, Jenna had to cope with the divorce of her parents and the loss of her mother. Instability at home and financial struggles resulted in the added stress of her and her siblings being in and out of foster care. Still, Jenna maintains a positive attitude and a focus on her goals.
She shines at school and is an avid reader, winning several awards due to her love of books. And Jenna hasn’t limited herself to academics. She’s a tutor, mentor for elementary students, on the tennis team, and was hand selected to be a member of the pre-college summer program, Blueprint—all while balancing a part-time job to support herself.
Jenna’s motivation to succeed is inspiring. She wants to go to college and study dental hygiene.
Thanh, West Valley City, UT
Thanh’s life dramatically changed when his mother passed away from cancer in 2016. His father moved back to Vietnam and now Thanh is largely on his own.
While juggling multiple jobs to support himself financially, Thanh excels in academics and extracurriculars—including serving as senior class senator. He’s also a member of the cross country and track teams and has been practicing martial arts since he was nine. Thanh’s mother taught him about the importance of giving back to others, and it’s a value he’s embraced, sharing his love of martial arts by teaching kids at a local studio and volunteering any chance he gets.
Thanh always shows up with a smile on his face. He works hard every day to achieve his goal of getting a higher education and working in health sciences.
Essence, Houston, TX
Essence is from a tight-knit, loving family. When she tragically lost her sister, Essence was determined to honor her and her entire family by becoming the first in the family to go to college.
She pushes herself both in and out of the classroom—stacking her schedule with AP and dual credit classes, climbing to the top 5% of her senior class, and going the distance in track and field. Her love of sports and health sciences have inspired her to want to help people as a chiropractor someday.
Essence has a giving spirit and gets along with everyone at her school. She’s never met a challenge she didn’t face head on and push through. What’s next? She’s going to bring that determination to a college campus.
Joe, Gladstone, MO
Joe had to grow up faster than most kids. As a freshman, he received news that his father was diagnosed with brain cancer. Joe stepped up to care for him and help pay the bills at home. Now, he wants to go to college, so he can continue to support himself and help his family.
Joe’s a natural leader at school. He inspires his peers to stand up for what they believe in and is a voice for those who don’t feel empowered. He’s taken an active role to bring change to his community, helping to organize a silent protest on National School Walkout Day. He’s also an exemplary student, excelling in college and advanced level classes, an Eagle Scout, and an actor and stage manager for his school’s drama club.
Joe’s mission is to help make the world a better place.
Doug, Saraland, AL
At twelve years old, Doug lost his dad and grandmother (his confidant) in the same year. When money became tight, he separated from his mom and siblings to live with a family friend and finish high school. At his new school, he faced challenges being Native American in a predominantly white student population.
Doug is driven. He thrives in academics and as captain of his football team. He’s earned multiple academic and athletic awards and will graduate with an honors diploma, the highest achievable. He assists with Special Olympics, coaches youth football, and participates in the annual Shell Chemical Clean-up Day.
In his pursuit of a bachelor’s and master’s degree in finance, Doug isn’t going to let anything stand in his way.
