Federal Work-Study Program
The Federal Work-Study Program provides students who need additional financial aid with part-time jobs to earn money to help pay for college expenses.
When your school approves your federal work-study job, you will be assigned a job that fits around your class schedule (studies always come first). Most of the jobs the program offers are paid on an hourly basis, and are usually on campus.
If you work on campus, you’ll usually work for your school. Jobs can involve anything from helping out in the financial aid office to working in the student cafeteria, being a research assistant, or even driving the college shuttle bus.
If you work off-campus, your employer will usually be a private non-profit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest. Some schools might have agreements with private for-profit employers for work-study jobs. These jobs must be relevant to your course of study.
Work-study program requirements
To qualify for Federal Work-Study assistance you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your completed FAFSA application can help make you eligible for federal financial aid programs including the Federal Work-Study program.
It’s important to remember that, unlike other financial aid programs, the Federal Work-Study provides you with an actual job (and a paycheck!) where you have to work to earn your money.
Remember to apply early for Federal Work-Study because it is part of your overall financial aid award. Schools that participate in the Federal Work-Study Program award funds on a first-come, first-served basis.
