Establish power of attorney
Consider granting power of attorney to an individual you trust. This will allow them to manage your financial matters, including your student loans, while you’re deployed or unavailable to manage them yourself. The person you designate will be able to sign documents and act on your behalf. The legal assistance office on your military base can assist you with the form to establish a power of attorney. When you have completed the document, send it, to Sallie Mae, PO BOX 6566 Wilmington, DE 19804-0566. Read more about the benefits of power of attorney.
Maintain your good credit
It’s important to maintain good credit. A good credit score shows you have a responsible credit history and that you’re a low-risk borrower who is more likely to pay back your loans. When you apply for a car loan or a mortgage, a lower interest rate could save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in interest costs. A good credit score also allows you to be more selective when choosing your lender. The better your score, the more leverage you may have in getting good terms on your loans when you shop around for the best deal.
To help you maintain your good credit, place an active duty alert on your credit report to reduce the risk of identity theft. When a business sees an active duty alert on your credit report, it must verify your identity before issuing credit. You may designate a personal representative (a spouse or another trusted person) who can act on your behalf to verify your identity or remove your active duty alert if needed.
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, nationwide consumer reporting agencies, will let you place an active duty alert on your credit report. Enter “active duty alert” in the website search box for forms and contact information.
