Two easy ways to protect your privacy
If you have student loans or other forms of credit, you may be solicited by companies asking that you purchase their products and services.
One reason for this is that Sallie Mae and other finance companies report your payment information (name, address, phone number, email address, etc.) to the national credit reporting agencies. You can use this information to your advantage because a reliable student loan payment history is a good way to show you are a responsible borrower.
Block credit agencies from selling your name
Credit agencies are permitted to sell your name, address, and other contact information as part of a mailing list to companies that wish to offer you additional credit.
If you receive "prescreened" offers of credit and wish to opt out, visit www.optoutprescreen.com or call (888) 567-8688.
Remove your name from telemarketing call lists
To stop individual telemarketers from calling you, you may ask them to put you on their "Do Not Call" list. At your request, the company is required by federal law to stop calling you.
To stop all companies from telemarketing to you, you may enroll in the National Do Not Call Registry. Visit their site at www.donotcall.gov or call (888) 382-1222.
If your telephone number is in this registry, telemarketers may not call you to sell goods and services unless you have a previous business relationship with them.
