Paying for college

The Sallie Mae loan portfolio

Sallie Mae offers a full line of federal and private student loans and programs to meet the diverse needs of today's college students. Sallie Mae began offering private student loans in the mid-1990s in an effort to provide students with complete financial aid solutions. The addition of private loans helped meet the increasing gap between federal support and rising tuition. Competition has further driven down the cost of federal and private student loans, giving students more options to fulfill their dreams without further burdening the American taxpayer.

Some of Sallie Mae’s unique offerings include:

Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Sallie Mae's HBCU Solutions helps students and their families navigate the territory of college funding, minimize their debt, and manage it wisely. Our materials and online support help make every step of the process more efficient and less stressful.

Hispanic-serving institutions

With a growing number of Hispanics entering college, Sallie Mae offers seamless planning- and paying-for-college resources in English and Spanish. Through outreach efforts and partnerships with Hispanic community-based organizations, Sallie Mae seeks to be a trusted partner for information and guidance on college and the financial aid process.

Graduate and professional students

Sallie Mae's graduate and professional team's mission is to ensure that America's future professional, business, and society leaders have the innovative financing solutions they need to achieve their education aspirations. We offer expert guidance to help them make sound financial decisions as they transition from the classroom to the professional world.

Community college students

Many students choose to attend a community college as a first step into higher education. Sallie Mae created Community College Solutions to provide these students innovative financial solutions that make community college affordable and accessible.

Non-traditional students

Higher education takes many different forms in today's world. From students studying abroad and working adults pursuing degrees online, to artists and tradesmen seeking skilled training, Sallie Mae offers targeted financing solutions to all students seeking an education.

2Futuro 2Futuro

Sallie Mae's 2Futuro, developed in collaboration with USA Funds, is the only fully bilingual college financing and outreach program that enables Hispanic parents and students to apply for college loans in Spanish — and also offers dedicated Spanish-language customer service support to students, parents, and financial aid administrators. 2Futuro also helps schools reach out to Hispanic families by offering access to scholarships, grants, and valuable financial aid information through its fully bilingual website.

“I would like to take this opportunity to convey my sincerest appreciation for the efforts of Judy Sanders.

It was the eleventh hour for getting my Parent PLUS loans approved and I will be forever grateful that Judy took my call that day.

With Sallie Mae, I was treated with the utmost professionalism and compassion.

I am convinced that without her efforts working with your credit department, my PLUS loans would not have been approved and my daughter's ability to attend college would have been in jeopardy.

I am truly grateful for the dedication and hard work of Judy and your team.”

“This program speaks to a growing population of families and students entering higher education.

At Whittier College, we want to make ethnic diversity more than something to which we pay lip service. 2Futuro makes the financial aid process seem less complicated, which helps draw families into our office.

We want to reach those who might not have considered financial aid beforehand.

Our use of 2Futuro is a first step in building a broad range of programs that address the needs of our Hispanic student population.”
