Federal Stafford loans

Federal Stafford loans are the most common source of education loan funds and are available to graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Federal subsidized loans are need-based. Interest does not accrue on these loans while the student is in school and during the grace period before repayment begins.
  • Federal unsubsidized loans are not need-based. The borrower is responsible for all accumulated interest on the loan.

Most of the terms and conditions of subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans are the same.

Federal Parent PLUS loans

The federally sponsored Parent PLUS loan is a low interest education loan for parents of undergraduate, dependent students. With a Parent PLUS loan, families can fund the entire cost of a child's education (less other financial aid).

Federal Graduate PLUS loans

Graduate and professional students may apply for Grad PLUS loans. The student must be a U.S. or non-citizen permanent resident and must be attending graduate school at least half time at an eligible school.

Visit the U.S. Department of Education website to see what schools are eligible.

Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan

The Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan is an ideal solution for students who still need funds after they have maximized free money and federal loans. With this loan, students can borrow up to the full cost of their education, less other aid received. The Smart Option Student Loan helps students save money, build good credit, and pay off their student loan faster.

Global Health Education Loan Program (GHELP)

If you are a U.S. student enrolled in a graduate health professions program at an eligible institution outside of the U.S., you may apply for the Global Health Education Loan Program (GHELP). GHELP can help cover the entire cost of your graduate health professions education. The program includes a federal Stafford loan, a private education loan, and a Residency and Relocation loan option for graduate medical students.
