Automatic debit (recommended)

With auto debit, each month, we’ll automatically debit the Current Amount Due from your designated bank account on the Current Amount Due Date (or the next business day in the event of a weekend or holiday).

When you enroll in auto debit, you don’t have to remember to make your student loan payment every month. Plus, you may qualify for a 0.25 percentage point interest rate reduction on your loan.

NOTE: If you’d like to pay more than the Current Amount Due each month, you can do so by making one-time payments online. At this time, you can’t pay more than the Current Amount Due each month through auto debit.

Online payments

Log in to your account to add your bank account information. Once you’ve added it, you can submit your student loan payment electronically each month.

If you have multiple bank accounts, you can make your student loan payments from a different bank account if you want to. Just remember to schedule the payment every month.

  • Payments made online prior to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Saturday, will be effective that day.
  • Payments made online after 5 p.m. ET or on Sunday will be effective the next business day.

Want to make extra student loan payments? If you want to add a little extra to your payments each month, this is a good way to do it. You can also use this in conjunction with auto debit.

Late student loan payments

You may be charged a late fee if you don’t pay your loan’s Current Amount Due (and any Past Due Amount) within 15 days after the Current Amount Due Date. The late fee amount is listed on your loan’s Disclosure and your billing statement.

If your student loan payments are late, you may also lose your eligibility for borrower benefits or repayment incentives. Late payments may also be reported to consumer reporting agencies, which could negatively impact your credit report.

Either the borrower or cosigner (not both) must enroll in auto debit through Sallie Mae. The rate reduction benefit applies only during active repayment for as long as the Current Amount Due is successfully deducted from the designated bank account each month and is suspended during forbearances and certain deferments. The auto debit rate reduction benefit does not apply to the K-12 loan program. Auto debit is available for all loan programs. However, the auto debit rate reduction benefit is not available for all loan programs.

When you provide a check as payment, you authorize us to follow our standard practice and use information from your check to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account. When we use information from your check to make an electronic fund transfer, funds may be withdrawn from your account as soon as the same day we receive your payment, and you will not receive your check back from your financial institution. In certain unusual circumstances, such as for technical or processing reasons, we may instead process your payment as a check transaction.
