What does it mean to be in an eligible period of military service?
Under the SCRA, "military service" includes the following:
- Full-time active duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard.
- Reservists on active duty.
- Members of the National Guard in military service for a period of more than 30 days.
- Servicemembers absent from duty for a lawful cause or because of sickness, wounds, or leave.
- Commissioned officers in active service of the Public Health Service (PHS) or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- U.S. citizens serving with the forces of a nation with which the U.S. is allied in the prosecution of a war or military action if that service is similar to “military service” as defined in the SCRA.
- Individuals who co-signed a loan for, or took out a loan with, an SCRA-eligible servicemember.

Why do I have the SCRA benefit on my account but my deferment was denied?
Sallie Mae extends the SCRA interest rate benefit for an additional year after military service ends. Military deferments and forbearances are available for student loans only during periods of military service.
